    Once again Turin hosted the prestigious International Book Salon held at the Lingotto May 8-12. A key participant was Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, who spoke of Pope Francis’s “novel” use of words in speeches, documents and chats with pilgrims at general audiences in St. Peter’s Square in Rome. As elsewhere, the book trade and independent book stores are feeling the pinch, but, in a positive sign, the market for children’s books is on the rise, and scholastic achievements in Italy’s deep South show some improvement.
  • Italian-French actress Valeria Bruni Tedeschi has won Best Actress in the World Narrative category at the 13th edition of the of the Tribeca Film Festival for her performance as Carla Bernaschi for her performance in Paolo Virzi's Human Capital. The film will be released in US theaters at the beginning of 2015.
  • Sunday 27, 2014: the Canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II. New York City wanted to take part to the celebrations for the canonization of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II. The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland and the Consulate General of Italy organized a special evening at Saint Patrick's Cathedral. The festivities included performances of religious music and readings of selected excerpts of both Pope’s encyclicals.

  • Fact number one: Italy’s Constitutional Court has overturned a controversial law from 2004 that banned the use of sperm or egg donation for infertile couples. Fact number two: a court in the Tuscan city of Grosseto has for the first time in Italy recognized a gay marriage, which had been previously celebrated in New York
  • NYC's Mayor shows his support for the second annual Mondomusica New York, which will take place at 82 Mercer, in Soho. A former manufacturing facility, 82Mercer still retains some of its original 19th century details, including cast iron columns, 14-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, and brick archways. This perfect location will combine easy accessibility and efficient services to both exhibitors and visitors, and will give Mondomusica New York the right touch of class & charm!
  • NIAF's Annual Spring Gala, an opportunity to recognize members of the Italian American community who have particularly distinguished themselves in their respective professional fields. Louis Prima Jr. and The Witnesses, an eight-piece brass-infused swing band which performed toward the end of the festivities certainly made the evening an unforgettable experience.
  • The building at 31 West Fifty-seventh Street that houses Rizzoli’s flagship store will be demolished, along with the two neighboring structures, making way for a new high tower. Friday, April 11th, 2014 will be the last day in this chapter of life of the cherished New York City bookstore.
