We met with Maurizio Forte, the Director of the Italian Trade Agency, North America. With him we discussed the Italian presence at the Fancy Food Show - which, like every year, takes place in New York at the end of June - but, mostly, we reflected on the path that Italian food businesses follow to become international.

In the final run-off vote for local administrations June 9, affecting 3.5 million voters in 136 townships, participation dropped by a quarter, from a healthy 68.2% to 52%. Some historic left-wing administrations fell to the Lega, but in some cases 5-Star Movement (M5S) voters chose to vote for the center-left instead of Lega candidates.
Sunday June 2nd, a cruise ship crashed into a dock and a tourist riverboat on the Giudecca Canal in Venice. Reported technical issues with the engine caused the crash leaving 5 tourists injured. This accident re-ignites controversy over banning cruise ships from entering the dock.

In Sunday's elections in Italy for the EU Parliament, acknowledged as a test for the Italian government itself, Matteo Salvini's Lega doubled its vote of just one year ago while the vote for his governing partner Luigi Di Maio's Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S)) was literally slashed in half. The Italian vote abroad was a fascinating variation on the Italian vote at home. Zingaretti's Partito Democratico won hands down, topping all the others at 32.2%. By comparison, the Lega sagged far behind, with just over 18% while the M5S trailed, with barely 14%.
