    Matera simply is one of the most unusual and memorable cities in Italy. Basilicata's favorite city was just picked as European Culture Capital 2019, beating some all time-favorites Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia-Assisi, Ravenna and Siena. The initiative is meant to highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe, to celebrate the cultural features Europeans share, to increase European citizens’ sense of belonging to a common cultural area, and to foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities.

  • On Monday, October 6, the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute hosted the symposium between the university institutions of Queens College (CUNY) and University of Calabria. An agreement of great significance was signed to promote of an educational program on Italian American studies at the Calabrian university. “We don’t want to assimilate the two cultures, but rather integrate them”

    Despite his pressing calendar, Italy's PM Matteo Renzi found the time to address the Italian community at a presentation held at the Consulate General of Italy that followed a private meeting with New York City's mayor Bill DeBlasio. Introduced by Consul General Natalia Quintavalle, who was accompanied by the Governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo, the premier touched several hot topics in a speech directed specifically to the community.
  • Professor Anthony Julian Tamburri's 198 page compendium, Re-Reading Italian Americana: Specificities and Generalities on Literature and Criticism, was recently presented at Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimo by the author himself in the company of Professor Josephine Gattuso Hendin and Professor Martino Marazzi. The book is a brilliant analysis of the status of Italian American studies in America and Italy, a powerful appraisal of critical works in the field, and a literary feast.
