  • Uff. Joseph Sciame, President/Chair of the Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of NY, Inc.
    Founded in 1976 by Dr. Angelo Gimondo, who at that time was the Superintendent of a Queens school district, the Italian Heritage and Culture Committee – NY, Inc. turns 40 this year. The non-profit group is behind some of the major events and celebrations held in the City during what is widely known as the “Italian Heritage and Culture Month” – October. We sat with its current President and Chariman, Mr. Joseph Sciame.

    From now on Italian residents in New Jersey will not have to go to Manhattan to obtain their documents to travel abroad. A mobile fingerprint scanner was revealed and given to the Honorary Italian Consulate of Clifton. The data recorded in Clifton will be transmitted to the Italian General Consulate that will then send the passport to the user. The event was attended by Italian Consular General, Francesco Genuardi; the undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Enzo Amendola, and the CGIE, Silvana Mangione; representative of the Italian Association Ieri, Oggi, Domani, Giulio Picolli; and many other prominent figures. This is the story of Ferruccio, Francesca, and the first passport granted in Clifton.

    What does the future hold for Italian-American writers? This is what seven Italian-American writers came to the John D. Calandra Institute on September 15th to discuss. A round table forum was held; writers Anthony Julian Tamburri, Fred Gardaphe, Robert Viscusi, Louisa Ermelino, Maria Lisella, Mark Ciabattari and Mark Rotella had the opportunity to discuss their books, sources of inspiration, experiences as Italian Americans, and what they feel the future will bring for the Italian-American community.
