  • The first ever picture of a black hole was revealed today, showing what scientists always believed was unseeable. This breakthrough is the result of the project Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), an international collaboration, in which Italy’s National Astrophysics Institute (INAF) and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) participated.

  • The 64th edition of the David di Donatello, Italy’s Academy Awards, saw the triumph of Matteo Garrone’s “Dogman”, which took home 9 awards. The Netflix film “Sulla Mia Pelle”, a documentary about Stefano Cucchi, the young roman man who died under custody in 2009, likely as a consequence of police brutality, also fared well, winning 4 prizes including Best Male Actor for Alessandro Borghi.
  • ROME -- Steve Bannon, mastermind behind the Donald Trump presidential campaign in 2016, is hunkered down this week in Rome, the city he calls "the center of the political universe." Bannon, who is an avid admirer of Italy's Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini, head of the increasingly dominant right-wing political party the Lega, has scheduled meetings here with as many as ten leaders of other European populist parties, from Western as well as from Eastern Europe.
