  • Italy has put the past year in a bid for transhumance to be added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The final decision will be made this November 2019. Found mainly in central and southern Italy, there are tratturi in the Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise, and Puglia regions, transhumance is the seasonal trek of livestock, a rare practice
  • In the final run-off vote for local administrations June 9, affecting 3.5 million voters in 136 townships, participation dropped by a quarter, from a healthy 68.2% to 52%. Some historic left-wing administrations fell to the Lega, but in some cases 5-Star Movement (M5S) voters chose to vote for the center-left instead of Lega candidates.
  • The small Italian village of Grottole, is getting ready to host five volunteers selected by Airbnb to become temporary residents as part of its “Italian Sabbatical.” This initiative is to revitalize the village that is at risk of disappearing.
  • Sunday June 2nd, a cruise ship crashed into a dock and a tourist riverboat on the Giudecca Canal in Venice. Reported technical issues with the engine caused the crash leaving 5 tourists injured. This accident re-ignites controversy over banning cruise ships from entering the dock.
  • On Thursday, May 23, 2019 ,The National Council of Columbia Associations in Civil Service, celebrated 60 years of uniting and supporting Italian Americans in civil service and honored outstanding members of its large but close-knit community with an annual Awards Dinner Gala at El Caribe Country Club in Brooklyn.
  • On June 14th and 15th, the Sorrentine Peninsula welcomes the first-ever edition of the Italian Export Forum, an initiative to bring together the main players, both entrepreneurial and institutional in order to create a unified and coherent system and maximise everyone’s profits and productivity. The idea is that this is not just a one-time event but the creation of a new network.
  • Following the Italy Run, organized by the Consulate together with Nutella Cafe and New York Road Runners, which took place on June 2nd, the celebrations for Italian National Day picked up again the following day at the Italian Trade Agency, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Consulate General of Italy, with a series of events featuring prominent Italian brands, figures, food, and a delightful jazz performance by Chiara Civello.
